When the proof is in the blood work

May 11, 2017

I have had rheumatoid arthritis for close to 18 years. After having my sons, it took a while to get diagnosed. There were times when I couldn’t turn the key in the car ignition or turn on a sink faucet.

I spent many years experimenting with different medications as well as natural remedies, I eventually found a great rheumatologist who helped me get back on my feet again. Even when meds can be helpful, there is always the worry of side effects so my doctor had ordered blood work.

Fast-forward a few years later when I started to improve so that I could start working out. I tried lifting weights and using machines in the gym but never really did any cardio. I also didn’t feel very motivated exercising on my own. I really enjoy group classes as it pushes me to go further and try harder knowing that others are also reaching for a goal.

Last year I met Hannah, a TRX instructor who introduced me to

The Uptown POWERSTATION.

I tried her TRX class and loved it!

I have been doing cycle, yoga and TRX ever since.

My last blood work results showed a decrease in my ESR levels (measure of inflammation) from 38 to 21 since October. Normal ESR levels are below 20. I am convinced that my increase in cardio based exercise is contributing to lower inflammation levels.

Besides lowering inflammation, I also love the way I feel after a class, putting all the hard work in during cycle or TRX may not be easy but the positive effects are felt long after I leave the gym.

According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of arthritis among adults reporting no physical activity (23.6%) is significantly higher than those who report meeting physical activity recommendations (18.1%). Arthritis can be a barrier to physical activity, however, inactivity is associated with conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity and functional limitations.
